Self storage units are not suitable for a variety of items due to safety, legal, or practical reasons. Here’s a list of things you should avoid storing in self storage units:

Perishable Items

Food: Anything that’s perishable or could spoil should definitely not be stored. It can attract pests (like rodents and insects), create unpleasant smells, and potentially cause mould or mildew.

Plants: Plants need sunlight and water, which self storage units lack, causing them to die and potentially attract pests or cause unpleasant odours.

Hazardous Materials

Flammable Items: Gas cylinders, oil, paint thinners, propane tanks, aerosols and other flammable substances should never be stored. These pose serious fire and explosion risks.

Explosives: Fireworks and other explosives are prohibited for obvious safety reasons.

Toxic or Chemical Substances: Corrosive, toxic, or hazardous chemicals can damage other stored items and pose health risks.

Asbestos: Asbestos should not be stored in self storage units and should be disposed of as per regulations and guidelines to prevent exposure and potential health risks.

Lithium Batteries: Batteries must be disconnected from devices, if possible, and not charged inside units. Any items that have built in batteries need to have no physical defects, are not stacked and have space for air circulation. We recommend that all batteries are stored with the lowest practical charge.

Living Creatures

Animals: Similar to perishable goods, live animals are not suitable for the conditions of a self storage unit. Neither are any dead animals such as game.

Fish: Fish need consistent water conditions and can’t be left alone in a storage unit without proper care.

Humans: Our self storage units are not designed or intended for human habitation.

Firearms and Ammunition

Weapons: Firearms or ammunition should never be stored in a unit for obvious legal and safety reasons.

Anything that Could Leak

Paint and Liquids: Storing liquids in self storage, especially paint or any item that could leak, is a risk. The liquid could ruin your items, the storage unit, or even damage other units nearby.

Wet Items: Any white goods stored should be completely drained down and dry before placing inside a self storage unit. This will help to prevent moisture, which can lead to mould and mildew growth.

Illegal or High-Value Items:

Stolen or illegal goods: Storing stolen items or illegal substances is prohibited.

High-value items: Although we offer the highest levels of security, items of significant monetary or sentimental value are best kept in a more secure location like a safe or safety deposit box.
