Things to do Around Melton

Twinlakes Family Theme Park

Twinlakes Park first opened its doors in 2003 and has since become a popular attraction near Melton Mowbray. It offers endless, fun adventures with a variety of activities to keep everyone entertained. Visitors can enjoy the theme park, outdoor water park and farm attractions.

The 100-acre theme park has over 40 rides with fantastic indoor and outdoor areas for the whole family to enjoy.

For the thrill seekers there’s the 40ft tall Excalibur swing ride, the Icarus Sky Flyer, and various rollercoasters. The younger members can enjoy rides like Wind in the Willows, Spinning Spiders and Pegasus Parade. Children can also enjoy a horse ride on Joust About in the Black Knights Castle, with younger ones able to play in the Tumblers soft play area.

A theme park wouldn’t be complete without animals. At the Birds of Prey Centre, you can see the smallest of owls to the greatest giant eagle. The Red Rooster Zoo Farm also has lots of animals you can meet including pigs, goats and rabbits.

Melton Country Park

Melton Country Park is 140 acres of green open space and is just a 10-minute walk from the town centre. This park has been awarded a ‘Green Flag’ every year since 2015, as it houses all the amenities required to win this prize.

The Visitor Centre is open to the public, with a café and toilet facilities available for use throughout the day. It also sports a play area for children of all ages.

There are also two other play areas within the park:

  • Climbing Forest has a range of climbing equipment and frames, zip wire and nest swing designed for all ages.
  • Scalford Brook is an enclosed space with a variety of play equipment and a wheelchair friendly roundabout, suitable for all ages.

Not only is Melton Country Park a great day to tire out your children, but it also has two Dog Agility Trails. The various obstacles will provide fun and exercise for the furry member(s) of your family too.  

Melton Carnegie Museum

The Museum opened in 1977 and is located in Melton’s former Carnegie Library. The ground floor displays collections from the Bronze Age to Present Day.

You can explore the history of Melton’s famous Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese, as well as other trades including saddlery, shoemaking and tin smithing.

If you go even further back in history, you’ll be able to see how the Romans, Anglo Saxons, Normans, Tudors, Georgians and Victorians would have lived in the area. You’ll also learn about what happened to the town during times of war.

Melton Heritage Trail

Melton Mowbray’s Heritage Trail is a self-guided walking tour which will take you on a journey through more than 150 years of history. You will see how the town has become what is it today and the people who had made this possible through the years.

Burton Street is home to some fantastic historical buildings, here are a couple which may be of interest:

  • The Bede House is a 17th century almshouse where six lowly widows or widowers were able to stay for free, as long as they prayed daily for their benefactor’s soul.
  • Anne of Cleves’ House, which is now a pub, was given to her in her divorce settlement with Henry VIII.

Although it may not take long to walk through the trail, there will be plenty of history to be seen.

Melton Theatre

Built over 40 years ago, Melton theatre, has supported many college and community ventures, as well as many other touring productions and artists.

The theatre is a proud member of the SMB College Group and is used by the college to train the next generation of performers and behind the scenes technicians.

With its large stage and 340 fixed seats, it really is a great asset for the town. Why not check out the upcoming shows here, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed. 

The Regal Cinema

The art-deco style cinema first opened its doors in 1933. As an independent cinema, designed by Charles Stevens (the son of the famous 19th century architect F.W Stevens) it’s no wonder people marvel at its intricate details and luxury.

If it’s a rainy day or you just want to catch all the latest releases, this will surely be the best place to go.

Play Close

In the back garden of St Mary’s Church, you’ll find Play Close, which hosts some of the town’s events throughout the year, including the Melton Country Fair, Melton Circus, outdoor cinema screenings and other seasonal events.

Play Close has a children’s play area with specialised play equipment for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

When summer arrives, there is often an event on at the weekend for the family to enjoy.

Melton Mowbray Golf Club

The Melton Mowbray Golf Club was founded in 1925 and was originally a 9-hole layout. This was extended to 18 holes in 1991.

The course is open all year round and welcomes non-members of all abilities and ages to come and play. Just be sure to pre-book your tee off time to avoid disappointment.

Wilton Park

Wilton Park is the place to go to keep fit and enjoy sports. With its 1.16 hectares of space there is plenty to do from playing tennis on the courts, pitch and putt, to five a side football.

For those who just want to relax there are tranquil gardens and picnic areas, as well as a small children’s playground.

The Pavilion Café offers indoor and outdoor seating, toilet facilities and parking.
