If spiders make you feel uneasy it’s perhaps best, you stop reading this blog right now.

Summer’s gone and Autumn means the return of those lovely house spiders! As the temperatures drop, they tend to move indoors, seeking warmth and food. The UK, with its mild climate, is home to several species of spiders that might make their way into your home. Here are a few you might encounter:

House Spider (Tegenaria domestica)

Description: These spiders are large, with long legs and a distinct brown colour.

Why they come inside: They’re often found in dark, quiet corners of homes, particularly in sheds or attics, as they search for food (mainly insects) and a place to hibernate during colder months.

The Giant House Spider (Eratigena atrica)

Description: Similar to the house spider but much larger, with legs that can span up to 12 cm.

Why they come inside: They’re typically seen in the autumn as males leave their webs in search of mates. They are harmless, despite their size!

The Money Spider (Linyphiidae)

Description: Small, usually only a few millimetres in size.

Why they come inside: They often wander indoors in search of shelter. They can often be found in corners of rooms or behind furniture.

Garden Spider (Araneidae diadematus)

Description: Recognisable by their distinctive white cross-shaped markings on their abdomen.

Why they come inside: While mostly outdoors, they sometimes come indoors during cooler weather to escape the drop in temperature.

Cellar Spider (Pholcidae)

Description: Long, thin legs and small bodies, these spiders are often mistaken for daddy longlegs.

Why they come inside: They are commonly found in bathrooms and kitchens, where they hunt small insects and other spiders.
